Professor Dan Ariely talk on his book “Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions”. I have no comment, just watch it… fascinating..

Google has announced the winners of the Project 10^100 and i found project Shweeb the most interesting of all. the idea is very simple:

as Shweeb’s website puts it:

Personal, aerodynamic pods are suspended safely from a monorail, propelled by an innovative transmission powered by the rider’s own pedal power (or alternatively, electric assistance is available). The rider and their luggage are accommodated in a comfortable, recumbent seat with a 360 degree panoramic views.
Just lie back, relax and take in the view!

i truly think this is an AMAZING idea and would totally support/use this technology when it is implemented. although i don’t know how this could function in places with harsh winters as our lovely minnesota ;) but i believe the decent Google prize will empower the awesome inventors’ minds and this technology will mature dramatically.

make sure to check out their FAQ which provides answers to some common questions and their possible applications gallery.

and my suggestion to the winner: please spend at least one hundred thousand of the $1M award on your web presence because it really sucks at the moment! :D

Another Facebook Security Hole?!…

September 7, 2010

Malicious Facebook Message Screen Shot sent to user's friends without the user's permissions.

I’m sure many of us have experienced an occurrence of receiving a message from a Facebook friend with the subject of “I thought of you” or some similar catchy phrase which contains a link to a malicious website or advertisement. Previously, I used to blame the user for being careless and not having logged out of their accounts, but today, IT HAPPENED TO MYSELF…

Since I consider myself a computer scientist and web programmer, I felt kind of ashamed. I was sure that I had not left my Facebook account open on any computer and I have a Mac, so the possibility of having been hacked was very low.

So here’s what I found out:
I had clicked on a link to an app that I had just received in a message from another hacked friend on Facebook! A very similar massage was sent on my behalf to my other Facebook friends immediately after I had clicked on the link. My status message was also updated with a similar message containing the link to the malicious Facebook app (mentioning that it’s been updated from my mobile phone!).

My hypothesis is that this malicious app somehow bypasses the Facebook user authorization process for updating status and sending messages. This can only be due to a hole in the Facebook platform which clearly needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

After checking my sent messages folder I found these links which I think all do the same thing i.e. send a message to your friends telling them to click and update your status message without your permission

DO NOT CLICK ON THESE:

Possible outcomes of this security hole:
This malicious link will exponentially spread all over Facebook! I can imagine millions of people have already received this malicious message and the hacker’s choice of sending this on the Labor Day weekend is very clever because most of Facebook employees are away for at least three days… :(
